The V & A Waterfront is also the gateway to Robben
Island, a former prison (now national monument) where
a visit is an emotional journey echoing with the sorrows
of stalwarts of ‘the struggle’ against apartheid.
The island was `home’ to many of South Africa’s
freedom fighters including Nelson Mandela.

| The
origin of the castle dates back to Jan van Riebeeck, who
arrived here in 1652. This is the oldest surviving building
in South Africa, and well preserved too, the pentagonal
fortress built by personnel of the Dutch East India Company
back in the 1660s-70s. Today it houses the regional headquarters
of the South African Defense Force in the Western Cape
and a military museum. |

In
1966, District Six was declared a white area under the
Group areas Act of 1950, and by 1982, the life of the
community was over. 60 000 people were forcibly removed
to barren outlying areas aptly known as the Cape Flats,
and their houses in District Six were flattened by bulldozers.
The District Six Museum, established in December 1994,
works with the memories of these experiences and with
the history of forced removals more generally. Located
at 25A Buitenkant Street |

was founded in 1825 and in 1897, established in its present
building in Queen Victoria Street. The exhibitions mainly
deal with the natural history of South Africa, her biological

impressive is the anthropological section with its big
realistic dioramas. The Planetarium lies in an adjacent
building.
PLANETARIUM
The Planetarium is a celestial theatre in the round,
utilizing the complex Minolta star machine and multiple
projectors to transport the audience through the wonders

Unique in the world and located in the historic Martin
Melck House in Cape Town, the Gold of Africa museum
complex is the world's first museum dedicated to the
story of African gold. The collection comprises over
350 African gold artifacts and jewellery of the 19th
and 20th century from West Africa.
Originally
the parsonage for the Lutheran Church next door, this
building was named after a wealthy businessman and the
benefactor of the Lutheran Church, Martin Melck of Elsenburg.
It was built a year after his death in 1782 and is the
only remaining example in the Cape of an 18th century
townhouse, complete with a "dakkamer" (a dormer
room at the top of the building where ships could be
sighted approaching the harbour). Located at the corner
of Buitengracht and Strand Streets. |

| The
Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town.
Built in 1679, the Slave Lodge boasts many records, not
all salubrious! It is the second oldest colonial building
in Cape Town, was once the largest slave lodge in the
land and is the oldest surviving VOC slave lodge of its
kind in the world.
The
many names of the building over three centuries –
Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme
Court, and SA Cultural History Museum – reflect
the long and rich history of the building.
The
Slave Lodge is a museum in transition. Currently, the
theme of the museum is decorative arts and cultural
history of South Africa. The exhibitions show the permanent
collection of what used to be the SA Cultural History
Museum Collections (now part of Social History Collections).
In future, the museum will exhibit the history of slavery
in South Africa.
